Calhoun County is in the heart of oil and gas country. Nearby is the site of the Rathbone oil well in Burning Springs, WV. The Burning Springs site is also the home of the Rathbone Oil and Gas Museum, which contains a collection of artifacts about the well. Calhoun County was founded in 1856 and named after Senator John C. Calhoun. Calhoun County is the home to a historic courthouse, the site for Mike Fink, the famous river boat man's, grave, and one of the few remaining round churches, Albert's Chapel United Methodist Church. There are four public education facilities to serve Calhoun County. Also in neighboring Gilmer County is Glenville State College, which is a 25 minute commute to Glenville, WV. Calhoun County has a community park which is located on Mt. Zion, WV. The park has a golf course, baseball fields, a community building, and is also noted for exceptional star gazing at night. The Upper West Fork Park also facilitates a community building, baseball field, and RV hookups for camping.
Calhoun County is home to two festivals each year. The Calhoun Wood Festival is held in Grantsville and starts on May 30 each year. The Molasses Festival is held in Arnoldsburg and begins on the third weekend of September.
Movie entertainment includes the Mount Zion Drive In Theatre which is operated seasonally. For a short drive to Spencer, WV there is the Robey Theatre which is the oldest continuously operated theatre in the country.
Other entertainment and recreation features that are close to Calhoun County include West Virginia's beautiful state parks, including Cedar Creek State park, the Mountain Lakes Amphitheatre located in Flatwoods, WV, the Augusta Heritage Center for Appalachian Culture, and numerous opportunities for hunting, fishing, camping, cycling, and hiking.
